WebTech Wireless GPS Locators Part of Innovative Program to Increase Taxi Safety in Belo Horizonte, Brazil Jul 31, 2008 4:00:00 AM
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 07/31/08 -- BHTrans has granted technical homologation for the installation of WebTech Wireless WT5000 Series Locators(TM) on all of the city's 6,000 taxis, in a move aimed primarily at increasing driver and passenger safety. The announcement was made at the launch of a pioneering program called Sistema Midia Taxi, in which the city provides the technology at no cost to participating taxi owners. The WT5000 Locators will be supplied and installed by SBTEC with the first installations having already begun.
The use of GPS and wireless technology was supported by taxi drivers and Sincavir, the taxi owners' union, who cited increased crime rates as the need for real-time vehicle tracking and location. Installations will include 'engine disable' functionality and a driver 'panic button', both of which directly address driver security concerns. The program will also help taxi fleet owners improve customer service, reduce operating costs and aid in the recovery of stolen vehicles. Aluisio Mol, Managing Director, WebTech Brazil, said, "There are an estimated 200,000 taxis operating in Brazil's state capitals, with more than 32,000 in Sao Paulo alone. Belo Horizonte is clearly leading the way in Brazil, and with 6,000 taxis, will demonstrate that this technology can greatly increase safety, as well as efficiency and improved service." Belo Horizonte is the state capital of Minais Gerais, located in the south-eastern portion of the country. It is Brazil's third-largest city with a population of 2.3 million (5.4 million metro area). Along with cities such as Curitiba, it has adopted several innovative solutions to address urban issues such as public transportation. This endorsement from BHTrans comes on the heels of WebTech Wireless receiving a certificate of homologation from Anatel, Brazil's federal telecommunications licensing authority, authorizing the importation and sale of WebTech Locators nationwide. These recent events reinforce WebTech Wireless' commitment to the Brazilian market.
