OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 15, 2008) -

In recognition of the 15th annual International Day of Families, I encourage Canadians across the country to take a moment today to reflect on the importance of families.

This year's theme is "Fathers and Families: Responsibilities and Challenges".

This government recognizes that families are the building blocks of a society, and it has been working hard to support families, children, post-secondary students and seniors who have contributed to build the wonderful country we have today. The government also reiterated its commitment to strengthen the economy on behalf of all Canadians, and to help those seeking to break free from the cycles of poverty and homelessness.

In the past two years, this government has introduced such measures as the Universal Child Care Plan, the new Child Tax Credit, a new Canada Student Grant Program and various other supports to help Canadian students, seniors, persons with disabilities, veterans and Aboriginal people. Helping Canadian families and building a stronger Canada have been key objectives in all that we have done. The Government will continue to respond to the changing needs of families by, providing them with greater choice, flexibility and opportunity, and by working in partnership with other levels of government, business and community organizations to meet our common goals.

As a father of two, I understand the responsibilities, challenges and rewards associated with parenting. I invite Canadians to celebrate the International Day of Families and to take time to appreciate fathers and all that they do for us.

Monte Solberg, P.C., M.P.

Minister of Human Resources and Social Development
